About Katunsky State Biosphere Reserve

Established in 1991, Katunsky State Biosphere Reserve is located in the heart of the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia. Covering a diverse landscape consisting of alpine meadows, coniferous forests, glacial valleys, and swift rivers, the reserve protects key watershed areas of the Katun River, one of the major watercourses of the region. It forms part of the larger UNESCO-listed Altai-Sayan Mountain Ecoregion, an important global biodiversity hotspot. The varied ecosystems host rare and endangered species such as the Altai argali (mountain sheep), Siberian ibex, snow leopard, and a rich assortment of alpine flora. The reserve plays a vital role in conserving the native genetic stock and protecting the natural processes of this rugged terrain. Visitors to Katunsky can explore marked trails traversing spectacular mountainous terrain, witness crystal-clear glacial lakes, and experience a landscape shaped by millennia of natural history. The area is also historically significant as part of traditional Altai indigenous lands, with cultural heritage sites linked to local nomadic peoples. Besides hiking, wildlife watching, and scientific study, the reserve supports eco-tourism activities focused on low-impact engagement with nature. Due to its remote and wild character, Katunsky is prized by adventurous travelers seeking unspoiled wilderness and immersive nature encounters. Accessibility is limited, ensuring minimal human disturbance and high conservation value.
